American Community Services (ACS)
ACS is a nonprofit community service effort being developed to benefit Cozumel. ACS is focused on two primary objectives:
  • Benefit the Cozumel community by promoting and facilitating volunteerism and philanthropic activities.
  • Enhance the knowledge and experience of Americans in Cozumel by providing information and referral services for vacations, relocations, working and living in Cozumel.
Current Projects Sponsored by ACS
  • Blood Donor Registry Project - The Cozumel Community Blood Donor Registry is an exciting project being launched now in partnership with Quintana Roo State Health Services.
  • Turtle Salvation Program Project - Ongoing efforts to restore the population of the Giant Sea Turtles of Cozumel.
  • Cozumel Lifesaving & Aquatic Rescue Program - Lifesaving and aquatic rescue program for Cozumel's beaches.
  • In recent years ACS has been involved in community efforts such as leading the Carnaval Kid's Costumes Fundraising Campaign, promoting the Coral Park Buddy Program efforts to benefit Cozumel, promoting Dive In to Earth Days, etc.
Other Volunteer Opportunities & Community Service Organizations
What ACS Does (currently and future plans)
1. Promote volunteerism and community philanthropic activities by:
  • Promoting community service events via the Internet.
  • Providing information on community service organizations via the ACS office and the Internet.
  • ACS Office on MelgarIdentifying volunteer opportunities with ongoing community service organizations, seasonal volunteer efforts, special interest projects, one-time events and/or needs for "virtual" volunteers who lend support from a distant location.
  • Consulting with Americans to match time available, talents and interests with volunteer opportunities. This includes vacationers, frequent visitors, full- or part-time residents and "virtual" volunteers.
  • Identifying volunteer project coordinators for specific ad hoc community service projects not sponsored by an organization (i.e. various activities to benefit local children).
2. Coordinate donation of money and supplies for community service activities by:
  • Partnering with other organizations and special project coordinators to solicit resources needed for volunteer efforts using the Internet, email and other forms of communication.
  • Coordinating the donation of money and/or supplies by communicating where/how to provide resources or serving as a "drop off point" for donations.
  • Ensuring donations reach the intended audience or volunteer activity.
  • Funding and sponsoring community service efforts.
3. Provide information and referral services to benefit individuals and the community by:
  • Sharing general tourist information via the Internet at www.cozumelinsider.com, email, phone or in-office consultation.
  • Posting weekly Cozumel News (English Translation) via the Internet
  • Providing referrals to service providers via email, phone or in-office consultation.
  • ACS Office on MelgarFacilitating sharing of information and experiences traveling and living in Cozumel via informal networking, referrals to other Americans/ex-pats and via the Internet.
  • Assisting travelers and Americans living in Cozumel with problem resolution recommendations for addressing issues with service providers.
  • Communicating trends, perceptions, and concerns identified by Americans visiting and residing in Cozumel to community leaders. This feedback is intended to enhance the image of Cozumel.
What ACS Does Not Do
  • Provide services offered by the American Consulate.
  • Duplicate the unique efforts of other existing community service organizations. The focus of ACS is to partner with other organizations to promote philanthropic activities as well as coordinate volunteerism and donation of resources.
  • Lead advocacy efforts or take action against service providers on behalf of Americans.
  • Funnel potential customers exclusively to certain for-profit ventures.
  • Support political partisan views or activities.
  • Encourage segregation of "Americans" as a separate entity within Cozumel. ACS encourages Americans living in Cozumel to immerse themselves by becoming directly involved in the broader Cozumel community.
