In an effort to help preserve and showcase the indigenous butterfly population of Cozumel, Patas Y Alas Butterfly Sanctuary has begun operations and is now open to the public beginning November 2006. Researchers have documented over 70 different species of butterflies on Cozumel Island but they are certain there are more yet to be discovered.
