Pre-Carnaval 2009 activities officially began Saturday night January 24th as thousands of Cozumel Carnaveleros gathered at the large, outdoor auditorium of Moby Dick to begin the month long competition to elect the official King and Queen of Carnaval, King and Queen of Alegria as well as the King and Queen of Fantasia for 2009.
Outside the auditorium, it was clear from the traffic jam, transit police and long ticket lines that Carnaveleros were coming out enforce to the opening event. This being the first Carnaval presided over by the new Presidente of Cozumel Juan Carlos Gonzales, everyone was eager to show their support of the new administration and see the live concert afterward by Gloria Trevi. Juan Carlos had appealed publicly for everyone to participate in Carnaval this year because he says Cozumel Carnaval belongs first to the people and families of Cozumel.
After a 3 year hiatus in Playa Del Carmen Carnaval, Mr. Spectacular himself, Sr. Fernando Ferraez returned to Cozumel to serve as the host for Carnaval 2009. Sr. Fernandez was greeted warmly with loud applause from the crowd as he spoke to a standing room only crowd of over 6,000 Carnaveleros. Ferraez spoke of how wonderful it was to be back in Cozumel Carnaval again and then he welcomed everyone and encouraged all to participate in this year's festivities as Carnavaleros!
Before announcing this year's candidates for King and Queen of Carnaval 2009, Ferraez recognized Cozumel's Presidente Juan Carlos Gonzales who spoke to the crowd about Cozumel's Carnavelero spirit as well as how important it is for families to continue to be the basis of enthusiasm for Carnaval and assured everyone that Carnaval 2009 will be filled with spectacular events.
Host Ferraez then welcomed the King and Queen of Carnaval 2008 Jalil y Andrea and asked them to say a few words and share a dance to help excite the crowd. Both stepped off the main stage and danced together around the ballroom floor amidst supportive clapping and clamoring of the crowd.
After watching a performance by the Carnaval Ballet, Sr. Ferraez began introducing the 6 spirited candidates who have stepped forward this year to compete for the titles of King Queen of Carnaval 2009!
All three Queen candidates, Karley (19yrs), Roxana (21yrs) and Ana Gabriela
(18yrs) spoke a few words to the crowd about their desire to be Cozumel's Queen of Carnaval 2009. Memo then introduced the 3 candidates for King of Carnaval 2009. As with the Queen candidates, Manuel (29yrs), Joel (24yrs) and Daniel (31yrs) were given the opportunity to address the crowd and explain why they wanted to be Cozumel's King of Carnaval 2009. All of the candidates have a long history and tradition of participating in Carnaval and were proud to share this with the crowd of voters.
Each of the candidates spoke of their own personal history as Carnavaleros, their devotion to preserving Carnaval as an island tradition and assured the crowd that if elected they would represent Cozumel with enthusiasm, dedication and hard work to ensure Carnaval 2009 is a lasting memory for everyone. All the candidates then returned to the stage together and danced as they encouraged the crowd to stand and dance and participate with applause. At the same time, campaign supporters of each candidate passed through the crowded auditorium and flooded Carnavaleros with posters and gimmicks trying to attract a vote for their candidate
The Event Host Ferraez then closed the evening's events with another call for everyone to become "Carnavaleros" this month and participate in Carnaval 2009 to help make it a spectacular and memorable event! Ferraez then introduced the amazing Gloria Trevi to the rambunctious and excited sell-out crowd of Carnavaleros who enthusiastically began the Carnaval 2009 season by storming the stage area to get closer and sing along with Gloria as a show of support for the controversial and popular singer. After Gloria's 2+ hour show and standing ovations, Banda Cozumel took the stage and the Carnavaleros focus shifted to dancing until 4am to grandly celebrate the arrival of Carnaval 2009.
