A very exciting evening of Candidate dance shows finally ended at 5:30am Sunday morning with the election of Cozumel's Royal Court for Carnaval 2013.
The colorful and spectacular Fernando Ferraez served as Master of Ceremonies for the evening and after 4+ hours of competition, the voting began to elect the King and Queen of Carnaval 2013, the King and Queen of Allegria 2013 and the King and Queen of Fantasia 2013.
As usual, the campaign of the candidates for King and Queen of Cozumel Carnaval 2013 was good spirited, intense, enthusiastic and filled with brilliant colors and lots of movement on the dance floor. Things got underway around 11pm Saturday evening as the Carnaval Ballet 24 member dance troup warmed up the crowd with an opening number from their energetic floor show to present our Master of Ceremonies for the evening Ferando Ferraez who emerged in a stately, formal solid black long coat costume with an enormously decorated gold top hat befitting of the event.
Ferraez advised the sold out, standing room only crowd of over 5,500 Carnavaleros that the Governor of Quintana Roo, Roberto Borge, was sending his fondest wishes for a great evening since he could not personally be in attendance this evening. Next Ferraez acknowledged Cozumel Presidente Aurelio Joaquín González who was in attendance for the important night of voting. The 2012 King and Queen Cholin & Karla Angulo said their good-byes with a quick dance around the floor for Carnavaleros and Ferraez then reigned in the crowd to prepare them for the candidate shows. Ferraez was elevating the tension and exciting the crowd with calls for support from each candidate's contingency of supporters who were on hand to watch the elaborate performances and to cast their votes later in the evening. All of the supporters came equipped with giant noise makers to use in support of their candidate so as Ferraez called each candidate's name, the roar of the crowd was punctuated with air horns, rattling cans filled with beans, and clacking wood spinners. With all this noise, nerves were jittery as each candidate and comparsa waited for their turn to perform.
 This year, the order of candidate's performances was determined in advance so Peter Koyoc kicked things off, followed by Mamacito, Cassandra, Rosemery, Pirrus Berry and finally Melina. Each of the 6 candidates had colorful and lively dance show presentations which lasted 30 minutes or more and contained at least 75 dancers! Each candidate show culminated with the candidate coming out for a final dance in their biggest, most spectacular costume for Carnaval 2013.
Around 2:30am votes began to be cast to see who would be the King and Queen of Carnaval 2013!! As the vote was conducted and counted Carnavaleros danced to the band "Banda Cuzamil." No one wanted to leave until the new King and Queen were announced but this turned out to be a considerable wait as the vote for both King & Queen was very close and had to be re-tabulated. In the end, it's not really about who wins ~ because ALL of the candidates are crowned as part of the Royal Court. It's more about bringing many elements of the community together in the process of performing and creating entertainment for this very special time of year here in Cozumel where a 135+ year old tradition continues. All candidates will serve very important roles in the celebration of Carnaval and as ambassadors of goodwill for the island in future events throughout the year!
Cozumel elected Peter Koyoc and Rosmery as their King and Queen of Carnaval 2013 while Pirrus Berry & Cassandra were voted King/Queen of Alegria and Mamacito & Melina as King/Queen of Fantasia.
The newly elected Royal Court of Carnaval 2013 will be crowned in official Coronation ceremonies held Wednesday February 6 at 8pm at Parque Quintana Roo in front of the Palacio downtown.
Everyone is looking forward to great festivities this next week as the parades get underway!
