Chichén Itzá, located about 3 hours from Cancun, is one of the great, monumental cities of ancient Mesoamerica. It flourished on the broad, flat reaches of Mexico's Yucatán peninsula between the 7th and 13th centuries CE. Chichén Itzá is a mixture of Maya, Itzá and Toltec influences.
The excavation site went under restoration in 1923 and yet has many uncovered mounds to support continued exploration for years to come. Roughly 18 structures have been excavated and restored. It is not fully understood as to what the former uses for these building were, however archeologists can hypothesize from the evidence uncovered.
Chichén-Itza is a must see for the serious Maya ruin hunter. The tour originates on the island of Cozumel & travels by ferry to the mainland. |

My husband and I took the mainland tour to Chichinitza from Cozumel. It was a great trip! It turned out we were the only two on the tour, but they didn't cancel. The vans are very nice and clean, water, cokes and munchies were always available, and the guides and driver were very professional and nice. Lunch was served at a restaurant with a white diamond rating and was very good. The tour in Chichinitza was incredible, and the guide had all of the answers for us, and was very knowledgeable. I really wanted to compliment you on your attentiveness to our plans to visit Chichen-Itza while we were there. Although this is the only travel plan you made for us, you went beyond the call of duty to arrange our trip to the mainland. We throughly enjoyed our tour, and were surprised when we arrived at Playa del Carmen and our tour 'bus' was not a 60 passenger bus, but was a van for a small group of 11 plus our guide. Since 6 of the 11 did not show up that morning, we had a group of only 5 plus our
