Travel Tip 2 - Always Bring Music
C.J. Gustafson, Freelance Writer and Photographer

Even if you are not a big music fan like I am, you might want to bring a small cd player (one with a built-in speaker works best) and a few cd's that capture the feel of the island. Or just bring the cd player and buy your own music when you get to Cozumel. Often the musicians playing in the tourist areas have cd's for sale. And several of the local stores, including the San Francisco market, have a moderate selection to choose from. But you usually don't get to listen to them before buying so it's basically a guessing game, (which I think is half the fun). I've learned that music can set the tone and enhance the enjoyment of almost any activity on the island.

Driving along the streets of Cozumel or the east island road in a VW bug with the top down is just so much better with reggae or island music blasting away. Most rental cars don't have radios, so this becomes even more important if you must have your music while you cruise.

Turn on a good tropical vacation or beach party cd while baking in the sun on the sand and see how quickly a Jimmy Buffet-type atmosphere develops. Get a cold drink to go along with it and you'll soon find yourself enthusiastically declaring that, "it just doesn't get any better than this."

Too broke to head out to the cantinas for a night of dancing because you spent all your money on the overpriced souvenirs in the oceanfront shops? Pop in a cd with a pumping Latin rhythm and get your own party started. You'll be surprised how willing others will be to join you. You meet some of the greatest people this way.

And for serious reflecting about life's mysteries while sitting in a beach chair and sipping a margarita, or for a romantic interlude with that special someone at the ocean's edge, you simply must have the right mood music. (Read about my Moonlight Dance.)

Cd's are light and easy to carry. They make great gifts to leave with friends you make on the island. And they can mean the difference between a good day and the perfect day. Don't leave home without them or have an adventure finding them when you get here.

Spicy travels everyone.
