Cozumel Festival of "El Cedral" is Underway!
The 168 year old traditional festival “El Cedral” kicked off last Thursday in Cozumel. The event was attended by authorities and the population in general to witness the crowning of the Queen of the festivities.

Festival de Cedral Cozumel - April 28 - May 3, 2016

In this island event, the participants range from infants to seniors as it is a traditional festival that carries Yucatecan and religious roots linked to the celebration of the Day of the Holy Cross. The festival has its origins with the arrival of Casimiro Cárdenas to the island where he arrived fleeing the massacres of Mayans who rebelled during the War of the Castes (Guerra de Castas).

Being very young Don Casimiro survived a massacre in the village of Chan Santa Cruz, known as Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo, waking up amongst the dead, covered with his own blood and that of others, nailed to a wooden cross. He made a promise that if he could reach safety, he would hold a celebration every May 3 celebrating the Holy Cross, a promise that today the descendants on the island still hold in tradition.

Marine Turtles Will Now Have a Secure Nesting Area
Thanks to the cooperation of businessmen and the community, so far, 10 of 22 signs have been placed in areas where sea turtles will nest, reported the Sub Directorate of Ecology staff who stressed that such actions are the result of the joint efforts of authorities and citizenship.

The installation of signs, which began last weekend, indicate that the eastern area is an area for the arrival of sea turtle species such as Caretta caretta (loggerhead) and Chelonia mydas (green). Rafael Chacon Diaz, Deputy-Director of Ecology of the City Council, explained that the project arose after the need for signage proved necessary, but would not be possible due to the lack of financial resources. What was done, explained the official, was to reuse materials that were available such as the bases of Christmas trees. The project was joined by citizens who assisted in cutting the bases of the trees in form of turtles as well as painting the signs. The idea is to place 20 signs, one every kilometer in the eastern area, to bring attention to the arrival of turtles.

The Cozumel Marina Protection Committee states that the season occurs between the months of May and September with arrivals of the turtles while hatching and release covers June to November.
First Turtle has Arrived to Lay Eggs
The first turtle arrived prematurely on the shores of Cozumel this season and coincidentally, she arrived for the celebration of “International Earth Day." The chelonian was sighted by the staff from the Sub directorate of Ecology and her nest was marked to establish permanent monitoring.

The event transpired during the evening of Friday, April 22nd when the turtle was observed digging her nest in the sand of the Spa "Chen River." She is of the “loggerhead" (Caretta caretta) species. Officials stated that the nesting season officially starts on May 15th, however, in rare cases, some turtles arrive early to lay their eggs in the sand. With this in mind and according to past experiences, predictions show that this year's season will be bountiful.

In the 2015 sea turtle nesting season, conservation staff marked approximately 3,500 turtle nests among the species of loggerheads and white turtles. This number of nests is expected to exceed that mark in 2016.
Cozumel Receives an Award for Scuba Fest
The Federal Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) and the Tourism Board of Mexico (CPTM) presented an award to Cozumel during the Tianguis Turístico Mexico 2016. The recognition was for the diversification of the Mexican Tourism product by the Cozumel Scuba Fest organization.
This was announced by Gilda Sigie on her Facebook account. Sigie is the Director of the Festival of Diving and this year will be its fifth edition. The Businesswoman stressed on her FB wall that this is an important milestone because it highlights the best of Mexico with respect to tourism products created by companies or Governments in the different States of the country.

The first edition was held in the year 2012 and today it has become one of the most important events of diving in Mexico, which brings together personalities from diving around the world and defenders of the oceans such as Jean-Michel Cousteau and Sylvia Earle.

On her Facebook page, Gilda Sigie placed images taken the night of April 28 in the framework of the Tourism Expo, held in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco, where it mentions the recognition given to Cozumel.
Cozumel, the Center for Sporting Events in 2016
Cozumel will host a total of eight international sporting events of swimming, cycling, fishing, golf and triathlon, most of them between the months of August to November 2016. Cozumel has now been designated as: “The Island of Sports.” According to data provided by staff of the Direction of Tourism and Sports, the events were already confirmed and scheduled and the Island expects thousands of people, as well as competitors.

Erick Arturo Villanueva Lanz, Director of Sports and Youth Service, confirmed that on August 7th, the “Oceanman” competition of international swimming will be the novelty event this year. Oceanman has been the protagonist of world events in open waters of the International Swimming Federation (FINA). He explained that this competition invites about 500 swimmers in men's and women's categories with competitions of a 10 kilometer swim, a 5.5 kilometer swim and an event of 1.5 kilometers.

Juan Emmanuel González Castelan, Director of Tourism, stated that the jewel of international sports competitions this year will undoubtedly be the World Cup Triathlon 2016 because an estimated attendance of 5,000 competitors from 100 countries is expected. In June of 2015 the International Triathlon Union (ITU, for its acronym in English) announced that Playa del Carmen and Cozumel would be the headquarters of this competition in 2016. In 2014, the ITU announced Mexico as a host country eliminating countries such as Germany and the United Arab Emirates who also wanted to host the event. The next step was to compete with Monterrey City in the state of Nuevo Leon, but finally the ITU decided on Quintana Roo for the 28th edition of the World Triathlon finals. The event will take place September 11th through 18th, 2016.

This is not the first time that Mexico was in the running to host this great sporting event. Cozumel was also considered in 1995 and 2002. The World Cup Triathlon is the most important world championship event under the support of the ITU Triathlon Association.
Projected Dog Park Changes Location
Cozumel dog’s lovers have hopes that they will have a “Pet Park” this year. This project was announced in 2015 and that it could be built in the Andres Quintana Roo Park. This past week, talks showed that the project is still alive, but now, it will be located in the area of the Bicentenario Sports complex area. This was reported by someone within the offices of the Direction of Public Works.

In June of 2015 a proposal was published by the Association of Veterinarians and the Humane Society of having a unique Park for pets in the city. It is known that the project already has funding and the origin of the funding has been identified for its construction, although so far they have not given to know the amounts. 10 months after the news, the construction has not started as of yet. The director of public works, Humberto Antonio Suarez Castillo, denies that it has abandoned the project and that it is awaiting final approval in 2016. The new location for the dog park will be in the northern part of the Bicentennial sports complex, which in the opinion of the architect is a larger area and more secure.

The last census of pet owners who held by the office of Ecology in 2013 during the anti-rabies vaccination campaign and it showed that there are 9,000 dogs and cats.
Cozumel's Police Officers Asked to Take Course on Human Rights
Elements of public security of Cozumel attended seminars provided by the staff of the Human’s Rights Commission of the State of Quintana Roo (Cdheqroo) to avoid falling into practices that violate the rights of people at the time of stopping them for any infringement.

Carla Rosado Aranda, instructor of the Cdheqroo training, announced that during the first talks with the officials they told her that many times they commit acts in violation to the code since they receive orders to do so, if not , they will be reprimanded. 60 police officials attended the seminar last week.
