A Personal Note from Sherri "Cozumel Carnaval 2016 is Here!"
Sherri Davis - Owner/Operator CozumelInsiderDuring the years 2000 - 2006 I had the privilege of serving on the Municipio's Carnaval Committee. Part of my duties included fundraising within the American community of islanders. The donations received were used to provide financial assistance to the kinder, grade school and high school group comparsas wanting to compete and participate in Carnaval. Assisting children of all ages to be able to participate from a young age ensures the Carnaval tradition will stay alive for years to come.

So for those of you who so generously donated all those years ~ many years totaling more than US$ 10,000 in donations ~ please come, join us for Carnaval and see the fruits of your endeavors! For those kiddos of 2000 - 2006 who received the financial aid are now late teens and early 20's and many are vying for the King and Queen positions as well as participating in new and different comparsa groups other than those associated with their schools.

Cozumel Carnaval is serious business each year ~ it's an event that enjoys almost 150 years of tradition on the island so it's one of those truly authentic events of the island that is not necessarily designed with tourism in mind! It's a "local" tradition and as such, the scheduling and ticket sales are designed with locals in mind. The tourism element of Carnaval does exist though since most all shows and competitions that go on are also done "free" in the open air parks for tourists to enjoy. And then of course, there are the parades which everyone can enjoy. Pre-Carnaval events are still underway and continue until next week when Carnaval officially begins so there is still time to get yourself a ticket and get down here to enjoy all the festivities!

Meanwhile, to illustrate the magnitude of these Carnaval King and Queen competitions, I've posted below a video from the event held Saturday night to elect the King and Queen of Cozumel Carnaval 2016. The video is a short compilation and keep in mind each candidate's show is typically 20 - 30 minutes long and involves hundreds of dancers. It's not the best video you'll ever watch, in fact this was for my own personal use really and wasn't intended to be viewed by others. However, in the end, I simply felt the video demonstrates the enthusiasm, dedication and magnitude of effort that goes into Cozumel Carnaval each year and why I stay so excited about it all the time!

So this is the show of the King candidate who did actually end up winning and will be crowned Cozumel Carnaval King 2016 in coronation ceremonies to be held next week. A true Carnavalero at heart ~ congratulations "Chuno" on a job well done!!

I just wanted to let you know that my family and I enjoyed the Cozumel Marine Turtle Observation opportunity immensely. The experience was everything wed hoped it would be and more. It was truly magical watching green and loggerhead turtles coming in from the sea, digging holes, and laying their eggs. We will never forget this experience. Thank you Martin so much for your help in arranging it for us. R. Ashton (July 2015) ~ Bethesda, MD USA

My family and I have returned to Cozumel many times - it's a favorite destination and we have watched it change over the past 20 years. The Cozumel Insider is a great publication - it's a wonderful way to keep up with the news about one of our favorite islands. We are preparing to visit again this August and the Insider has shown us some different activities to try, as well as helped to bring us up to date with local political and ecological happenings. We're delighted to see the interest in wildlife conservation throughout the area. Keep up the good work on this terrific site. D. McClean ~ unknown

Sherri, my boss wants you to take down your webcam! It seems it is preventing me from getting any work done! I just stare at it all day. haha I will be there in two weeks. It's been since March since we spent a week there and I'm going through withdrawals. I hope Mezcalitos has the 'ritas ready for me. Jennifer ~ Louisiana

Thanks for such great attention to helping the process. I was struggling with feeling confident in ordering on Thrifty, Budget, Dollar or Avis web sites for Cozumel. Your site provide clarity in understanding the piers and providing confidence in how to pick-up the car at the location we would most likely be docking. Thank you for that. I look forward to having transportation near at hand for myself and my parents. R. Taylor (December 2015) ~ Laguna Niguel, CA USA

Sherri, I was browsing Cozumel Websites the last few days. I came across yours. I have never found a website so detailed to a destination in my life! You supply all the information a traveler could ever want!

You give us how to get there, what to do while we are there, where to stay, how to travel, what to do if we get sick, where to eat, and it just goes on and on!

Thank you for taking the time that you spent in making this my new favorite site!

I wish every vacation destination had a site like this! BRAVO! Jim Piere ~ Simi Valley CA 93063
