New Year's Day |
|
New Year's Day (Día de Año Nuevo) in Cozumel is usually a very relaxed affair (well, that is after everyone gets to bed from celebrating New Year's Eve, La Víspera de Año Nuevo, around 6:00am or so)! So when you wake up on the island on January 1st, relax, take it easy and recover. New Year's Day is a national holiday, so all banks, government offices, schools and many businesses are closed (we think it is primarily so that everyone can recoup from the wild festivities of the night before that lasted into the early morning hours). Regardless, once you are up and functional, (we recommend around 3:00pm or so), you will continue to be greeted by very cheery "Happy New Year's (Feliz Año Nuevo) by the locals and everyone you meet!
The locals will again, as they did on Christmas Day following their Christmas Eve dinner, follow the tradition of recalentado (reheating) their New Year's Eve dinner in the late afternoon and enjoy the leftovers. It is common to have various family members and friends over to share in the recalentado, especially those that were unable to celebrate with you the night before. It is a wonderful tradition to start the year off with your many friends and family to celebrate the upcoming year!
So if you are here on the island on New Year's Day, we urge you to relax, recover and maybe take a nice walk on the beach. You might also want to complete a few more of the numerous New Year's traditions that you might not have had a chance to complete the night before as there are so many to accomplish. And if you are like we usually are, after a night of partying and celebrating and can't quite remember the traditions you need to uphold, please check out a few of the more popular traditions here (New Year's Eve in Cozumel) that you can perform to ensure the upcoming year will be the BEST EVER and filled with love, happiness and good luck! Heck, you are already off to a WONDERFUL start, you are here in Cozumel - Feliz Año Nuevo!!!
