Valentine's Day |
|
Love is "ALWAYS" in the air here on the beautiful, magical and tropical island of Cozumel but on February 14th, it really kicks into overdrive! The Mexican culture attaches a lot of importance to love and friendship. Valentine's Day (Día de San Valentín) or more commonly referred to as El Día del Amor y la Amistad (The Day of Love and Friendship) is a "special occasion" to celebrate what Mexicans show to each other year round. All-in-all, Valentine's Day in Mexico is simply a day to celebrate love, however and with whomever you choose.
Historically and religiously, Valentine's Day is the feast day of Saint Valentine, one of three (3) saints in the Roman Catholic Church who were martyred for their contributions and works for the advancement of the church. Over time, the celebration of the February 14th holiday has evolved in both purpose and meaning, which started back in the 18th Century when lovers expressed their love for each other.
What we love about Mexico's tradition of Valentine's Day is it is not just about celebrating love with your partners, but also amongst friends. For many other countries, it is all about couples but here in Mexico, even if you are single, you won't feel left out as this is a time to celebrate your friendships. So you will find many "single" friends gathering across the island to head out somewhere fun to celebrate their love and support of each other as Valentine's Day in Mexico, the basic idea is to let your loved ones know that you care and wish them to be happy and contented in life.
As in most countries, this is a time of where people commonly give various gifts. Flowers are very popular and you will see many red and pink roses for sale. Candles and balloons, candies and chocolates are also very popular gifts at this time of the year. Cards are in high demand and many couples will write their own poems to give to their partners on the 14th. All of these gifts sell like hot cakes and you will find many lovers will plan month's ahead on how they are going to flatter and pamper their partners.
Mexico also has a number of unique traditions for their Valentine's Day celebrating! There is a tradition of young lovers singing under the window of their love in an attempt win their hearts! They will also often hire a Mariachi band to help them (for us, that would be a requirement as you don't want us howling under you window). In some areas young people will meet in a park with the boys and girls in separate groups with them walking around a kiosk in opposite directions. When they pass each other, a boy may offer a flower to a girl and then when they come back around and she still has the flower, this is her indication that she is willing to go out with him. Another more recent tradition that has become popular is to plaster the car of a couple in love with Post-It Notes with expressions of love on them.
And what makes the day very popular to tourists here on the island is Valentine's Day falls right in the middle of high season. You will find the beaches packed, the weather is warm with temperatures varying between an average high of 82F/28C and average low of 68F/20C, just perfect for a vacation getaway from the cold in other parts of the world. On Valentine's Day, bars and pubs in Mexico will be packed with people from unmarried couples, to all members of the family, to friends celebrating with each other! You will LOVE spending a Valentine's Day on the island!
