Easter Sunday / Holy Week |
|
Easter Sunday (Domingo de Pascua) is one (1) of Mexico’s biggest celebrations which remembers the biblical story of when Jesus rose from death. This is a very important religious holiday in Mexico. Religious celebrations are at the forefront, but, since Mexican schools have two (2) weeks vacation with most schools being off for two (2) weeks with the week preceding Easter (Holy Week /Semana Santa) and the week following Week of Easter (Semana de Pascua). This time is when many Mexican families head to the beaches and tourist attractions.
Easter Sunday is celebrated with mass which is usually crowded. Church bells will ring and the plazas around the churches after Mass will be crowded with churchgoers as well as street vendors selling food, toys, balloons and more This is generally a day when people go to Mass and celebrate quietly with their families, though in some places there are festivities with fireworks, and jubilant processions with music and dancing. This original Christian holiday is widely supported and celebrated in Mexico with almost 90% of the population being Catholic.
Easter Sunday (Domingo de Pascua) is the culmination that began forty (40) days ago on Ash Wednesday (Miércoles de Ceniza). If you have the good fortune to be able to celebrate Easter here in Cozumel, just remember beaches are the most popular spot at this time of the year, so you will definitely need to keep this in mind if planning your own personal travel during this period. But no worries about your travel at this time as while it is a time nationally for vacation for many, the exception is those of us in the tourism industry, we will not take time off during this period so you will find all hotels, resorts, restaurants, etc. fully staffed and ready to make your vacation the best possible experience.
Again, if you will be visiting us during Easter Sunday and would like to partake in the many religious events on the island on leading up to Easter Sunday and would like information about the churches in Cozumel, please feel free to click on our link - Cozumel Churches and the under the "Select Facility Type", select Places of Worship to see the various churches!
