Teacher's Day |
|
As anyone that has attended school, either private or public, you all know how instrumental your teachers were to helping educate (ok, maybe just "put up" with you) you during these very formative years. Teachers give so generously of their time and efforts, often for minimal pay, so it is only fitting that not only Mexico, but many countries across the world recognize the important role teachers play in society annual with Teacher's Day (DÃa del Maestro)!
In Mexico, the DÃa del Maestro is held annually on May 15th! This day is set aside for students to honor the many teachers across Mexico. While this is solely an observance, not a federal public holiday, some schools do close at mid-day and other do close for the entire day. For those schools still open, it is a very relaxed day with normal classes and activities halted and student organize cultural events that promote the importance and dignity of the teachers' role in society although some schools still operate as normal.
Mexico's Teachers' Day was first celebrated on May 15th, 1918. The date of May 15 was proposed at the Mexican Congress on September 27, 1917, approved on October 29, 1917 and published on December 5, 1917. There is ongoing speculation about the possible reasons for choosing this date. One (1) popular assumption is this date was chosen when the Mexican army, which supported President Benito Juarez, seized the city of Querétaro in central Mexico on May 15, 1867. Another belief is that that students gathered to celebrate the birthday of a teacher named after Saint Isidore the Laborer who died on May 15.
Regardless of the reasoning and decision to hold Teacher's Day on May 15th annually, the goal is to ensure there are plenty of festivities to celebrate Teachers' Day for teachers, teacher aides and other staff in the education system. Students will shower their teachers with handmade presents, cards, poetry, and artwork. Many students form groups to take part in singing and theatrical performances to show their appreciation on the day. Class parties are organized for professors and teaching staff at universities and colleges.
Whether on our lovely island of Cozumel or in your home town and country, everyone should take time to celebrate all educators that have played such an important role in our lives. Take time to recognize the contributions your teachers made to your lives and even if you are an "old" folk, reach out to a former teacher and let them know how they impacted you through their dedication and efforts. They will appreciate tremendously your recognition knowing they played a key role in helping you become the person you are!
