Assumption of Mary |
|
Assumption of Mary (Dia de la Asuncion de Maria), also known as Assumption Day or The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary commemorates both the death of Mary and the bodily assumption into Heaven, before her body could begin to decay - a foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time. This event is celebrated in Mexico and worldwide on every August 15th and is a religious observance, but not a federal public holiday in Mexico.
Jesus' mother, also known as the Virgin Mary of Our Lady of Guadalupe is one (1) of Mexico's patron saints. The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary (Catedral Metropolitana de la Asuncion de Maria) located in Mexico City is dedicated to Mary and is one (1) of Mexico's oldest Roman Catholic cathedrals in the Americas. Many statues and artwork depicting Mary's assumption are found here and in churches across Mexico.
This religious holiday, celebrated since the fourth (4th) century CE is a Christianization of an earlier harvest festival. For centuries across the world, celebrations were held in honor of the goddess Isis of the Sea, who was born on this day according to mythology. The Catholic church, as was often the case, to assist in converting the "pagans" and their existing rituals, simply changed it into a Christian holiday and the Assumption Day was created (again, nobody beats the Catholics in marketing - bar none)!
The celebrations across the world include night time bonfires and public illuminations. Blue is the color most often associated with the Virgin Mary as it symbolizes truth and clarity, and it is the color of the sky, which symbolizes heaven. Another popular symbol is the lily, which is a symbol of purity, chastity and simplicity, it is also associated with the Virgin Mary.
