Here in Cozumel, what do you call hitting the water at 7am to swim 2.4 miles in ocean currents, then jumping on a bike to pedal 112 miles and finishing with a 26.2 mile run? Oh, and this is done in one (1) day! Some call it insane, others call it incredible and here on the island, we call it Cozumel's Ironman competition! The Cozumel Ironman (Ironman de Cozumel), sponsored by this year by Mazda, is the island's most popular sporting event of the year. This year, the event will start with activities on Thursday, November 21st with the actual Ironman race held on Sunday, November 24th and the Awards Ceremony finalizing the event on Monday, November 25th. If you are visiting the island, plan to come watch the competitors as it is quite the event to watch!
The race starts at Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park with a swim at 7:15am for the Professional/Elite Start male competitors, 7:20am for the Professional/Elite Start female competitors and at 7:30am rolling start for the remaining field by age group of competitors on Sunday. This year a total of $80K in cash prizes, in addition to the recognition, medals and trophies will be given to the top eight (8) Elite Start competitors (8 men, 8 women) and starts with a top prize of $15K for the top Elite male and female. The culmination of the event will be the awards ceremony held Monday, November 25th at 6:00pm EST.
Inaugurated in the Fall of 2010, the Cozumel Ironman now ranks as the 2nd most popular Ironman race on the competitive circuit (just behind Kona, Hawaii) and is an important qualifying event for the World Ironman 2020 event . The 2,800 Cozumel race competition spots available have been sold out months in advance and the island is now working on all the last details to ensure the competition areas are fine tuned and ready for the race.
There is still some availability in hotels and vacation rentals for the race dates, but this always changes as race day arrives with more friends and family coming along to support their competitors. So be sure to book early if you intend to travel to Cozumel during this last week of November for your vacation. We still have limited availability this weekend at IslaMar Vacation Villas.
