American Thanksgiving Day |
|
The American Thanksgiving Day (Día de Acción de Gracias Americana) holiday and tradition started in 1621 when the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that has become a well enjoyed tradition in the United States. For more than two (2) centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states until 1863 when during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held every November. It now is always the last Thursday of November.
Being the southern neighbor of the United States, Mexico recognizes the American Thanksgiving Holiday and Cozumel is no different. As travelers know, the Mexican people and islanders in particular are very kind, giving and polite folks so most are eager to make Thanksgiving travelers feel right at home and welcome for a celebratory holiday meal. Walking around town just prior to "Turkey Day" travelers will find signs and billboards in front of many Cozumel restaurants that plan on serving a special Thanksgiving meal. Not all restaurants do this so just look for the signs out front. Some places will offer the traditional turkey and dressing while other restaurants will serve up their own interpretation of Thanksgiving with a Caribbean island flair! Island folks also know Americans love their football on Thanksgiving and many will have big screen televisions tuned to the many football games and festivities going on in the US.
If you are going to be on the island but would rather prepare your own Thanksgiving meal, you can easily go to Cozumel's new Sam's Club and purchase your own turkey to prepare. However, we recommend dining out at a restaurant that will feature a "Mexican" twist to the feast! You may find Mexican chorizo pumpkin soup, cranberry relish and mango salsa, fruit and nut bread pudding and of course, turkey, pork and chicken prepared in various styles and flavors. Again, just look around town for the billboards in front of each establishment or pass by your favorite eatery and ask what they are having for Turkey Day! Reservations are suggested at all places since quantities of these foods will be limited.
So don't be shy, come visit us in Cozumel over Thanksgiving! Enjoy a warm, festive vacation and start a new tradition in celebrating the holiday, island style! We would love to see you here in Cozumel this Turkey Day and help create a fun experience for you and your family.
