Cozumel Restaurants & Eateries |
 |
It stands to reason that a tropical island paradise like Cozumel which enjoys over 4 million visitors annually would have its share of restaurants to boast about. As the number of high end, commercial eating establishments continues to grow, Cozumel is very fortunate in that the majority of its restaurants are not franchised or company owned but instead are entrepreneurial efforts where multiple generations of an entire family participate.
Enjoying a meal at one of these family operated restaurants is literally like being invited into their home to sample the delicious flavors enjoyed by their household. And with many people relocating to Cozumel now from various parts of Mexico like Oxaca and Michoacan, there are restaurants that prepare traditional Mexican food with regional flair completely different from the Yucatan flavors found in this area.
Those adventurous travelers who have wandered back into the regular neighborhoods of Cozumel will see that there is at least one eatery in every city block and often times 2 or three. Up until just a few years ago, the most common way of getting around the island was by walking or bike. In addition, many households did not have refrigerators or alot of room to store foodstuffs. Since folks didn't want to go far for groceries and welcomed the opportunity not to have to cook a meal several times a day, corner markets and neighborhood eateries became plentiful and inexpensive.
We've often heard it said upon taking an island visitor to a neighborhood eatery: "Gosh, this place would make a fortune if it were just located downtown." The truth is, the eatery was not initially established for tourists but rather by a family wanting to serve a neighborhood. If a tourist or two happens to find these places then that's a bonus to these entrepreneurs. It is only by good luck that we find these quality establishments scattered throughout our city.
Island visitors will find countless restaurants along the waterfront and throughout downtown San Miguel and many of these are listed here. However, in the spirit of supporting a long stand element of this island culture, COZUMELINSIDER has also elected to also seek out and present some of the lesser-known, predominantly family-owned places that first-time visitors might otherwise miss.
We will continue to add to our list and keep it current as we discover more great places to eat, and we invite all of you to do the same. Please send your comments, reviews, and/or suggestions to questions@cozumelinsider.com
A number of island restauranteurs give taxi drivers a commission for every customer they bring to their business. This has resulted in some drivers telling visitors that the restaurant they are requesting is closed, that the food is not good, or just generally insisting that they go where the driver wants to take them. We suggest that you print out our restaurant information and bring it along, so you can give the taxi driver the correct address and there will be no confusion about where you want to go.

Cuisine: Northern Italian Seafood & Pasta Location: El Cantil Tower North - Top Floor Rafael E. Melgar & Ave. Xel Ha (Calle 13) Credit Cards: Visa, MasterCard & American Express |
In May 2009, this long time island favorite restaurant was relocated to the top floor of El Cantil Condos which took sunset viewing to an all new level. From its new roof top location 9 floors above the downtown area, the view is spectacular of both sunset as well as the city.
Over the years, the Northern Italian style cuisine menu has been updated and new dishes added but the variety and classic flavors combined with the freshest seafood imaginable are what keep patrons coming back year after year.
Try the blue cheese salad or the fresh yellowfin tuna appetizer to start! Then go for the surf and turf for a mix or the seafood liguini combo ~ both will suit you! This is one of my favorite places to have seafood ~ it's super fresh! |

Our humble opinion says this is one of Cozumel's best kept secrets for fine dining and excellent food. Step inside the front door and feel the warm, cozy elegance of this place brought on by a caring, friendly staff, correct lighting and decor. Without pretention, guests are presented a wine and food menu so extensive it takes some time to decide what to eat here! |
"Asadero El Pollo" - Delicious Charbroiled Sinaloa Style Chicken!
Established: 1990 Hours: Daily 10am - 6pm Or Until Sold Out Phone: None Walk Up Only |
Cuisine: Roasted chicken from Wood Burning Brick Oven Location: Avenida Juarez Between Avenidas 70 & 75 |
Another island tradition for that trip to the other side of the island or for a quick easy party gathering. Being from Sinaloa, which is farther north in Mexico and close to the Texas border, the flavor of this roasted chicken is very similar to the taste created in USA chicken roatisseries. Pure, simple flavor of the wood not obliterated by lots of other spices. These whole roasted chickens are so good and so economically priced, it's difficult to justify cooking at all! |
|
|
"Cameron Dorado Restaurant" - Eat like a local or a king here!
Established: 2005 Hours: Monday - Saturday 7am - 4pm Closed Sunday Phone: 987-872-7287 |
Cuisine: Seafood & Pork Tacos or Sandwiches Location: Corner of Juarez (Transversal Hwy) & Avenida 105 |
It's a way of life here ~ islanders eat seafood tacos for their breakfast/lunch meal and this is a very popular spot! This restaurant has a complete menu of seafood to choose from although most locals just order tacos. Everything is cooked fresh daily and salsas are whipped up fresh every few hours. They even make and bottle their own beverages here as well.
Given its location right on the transversal highway to the other side, this place makes a great stop before or after a spin around the island.
Order at least 3 shrimp tacos and a Coca Cola to get started. The MUST HAVE item here is the dark green, roasted habanero salsa. Typically not even offered to gringos ~ ask for it and try it even if you think you don't like hot stuff! BEWARE: A little dab will do ya at first...then you can't get enough of it!! |
|
|
"Casa Mission" - Family Owned and Operated!
Established: 2000 Hours: Daily 3pm - 11pm Phone: 987-872-1641 Reservations Recommended Credit Cards: Visa/Mastercard/American Express |
Cuisine: Traditional Mexican foods with seafood specialties Location: Corner of Avenida 55 & Benito Juarez Website: www.missioncoz.com |
Casa Mission offers superb food, however the real attraction here is not the food, but the setting. Located off the beaten path, the restaurant is the veranda area of a large hacienda style Mexican home. It is surrounded on all sides by an extensive garden that combines perfectly with the colonial hacienda ambiance. One of the most romantic spots on the island for cocktails or dinner or a special reception event.
This family also owns/operates La Mission Parilla on 30 Avenida, La Mission Parilla Sur near the International Pier and La Mission restaurant on AR Salas between Melgar & Avenida 5. |
|
|
"Chilango's Taqueria" - Huge Portions ~ you won't leave here hungry!
Established: 1993 Hours: Daily 6pm - 1am Credit Cards: None |
Cuisine: Mexican Quesadillas or Huaraches Location: Avenida Pedro Joaquín Coldwell (formerly Avenida 30) Between Calle 3 Sur & Morelos |
This family-owned business has been around for many years and continues to be one of the few places on the island where you can find huaraches. They feature handmade tortillas which are made and cooked at the counter right in front of you and essentially offer two menu choices: Quesadillas or Huaraches.
Simply put, huaraches are open faced tortillas smeared with beans plus the meat/veggie topping that you select while quesadillas are tortillas folded over cheese and the meat/veggie topping picked. Choose your meat or vegetable ingredients from the fresh daily selection housed behind the glass case at the kitchen counter.
If you need some suggestions, we recommend starting out with a nopales quesadilla (yes, we mean cactus) and a papas (smashed potatoes) quesadilla.
Don't forget to act like a local and eat the awesome green salsa offered on the table and try their tasty "Agua de Jamaica" to drink! |
|
|
"Conchita Del Caribe" - Pick Your Own Fresh Fish to Eat!
Established: 1999 Hours: Daily 11:30am - 7:30pm Food Service: Dine In Take Out No Delivery Credit Cards: VISA/MC |
Cuisine: Seafood Location: Avenida 8 de Octubre (formerly Avenida 65) Between Calles 13 & 15 Sur Phone: 987- 872-5888 |
Now open in their new location with the same great menu! If you love seafood, this is the place for you -- it's far from the tourist zone and priced for locals. Specifically, the whole fish is very reasonably priced since this is a big island favorite. After ordering a fish, the waiter will ask patrons to pass into the front kitchen area to select their fish from the day's fresh catch. It is then weighed and prepared according to preference: fried or grilled.
The shrimp and lobster are also excellent choices, and you shouldn't leave Conchita without trying a small ceviche mixto as an appetizer, since ceviche is really an island staple!
Don't go here without an appetite!
Remember that the smaller fish fry up better than the big ones and that whatever you select goes great with an ice-cold cerveza. |
|
|
"D'Limonds" - Cozy place to read your favorite book!

|
|
"El Moro" - Over 30 Years of Serving Travelers!
Established: 1980 Hours: Daily 1pm - 11pm Closed Thursdays Credit Cards: MC/VISA |
Cuisine: Traditional Yucatecan Style Mexican & Seafood; Kids menu Location: Avenida 75 Bis Between Calles 2 & 4 Norte |
Rodolfo "El Moro" Chacon and his sons have been serving tourists and locals alike since 1980 and despite being a long way from the waterfront, El Moro remains a popular destination for island newcomers as well as frequent visitors. El Moro is continued proof that a tourist zone location is not a requisite for success. When it comes to good food ~ folks will find you!
El Moro offers an extensive menu with traditional Mexican platters prepared Yucatecan style and featuring several different mole sauces. They also offer an excellent seafood platter called the Zacarias Special, however we love to order the "fish in paper" or "shrimp in wires" (shrimp-kebob) from the English side of the menu. There is also a kids section of the menu and hamburgers for those not wanting to sample the local cuisines.
If you stop in on a Saturday or Sunday, you'll generally find them cooking up some cochinita pibil or one of their other Yucatecan specialties. This spot is famous for always serving their guests an extra dish "on the house," and we give them an extra star for being one of the friendliest places we've come across yet. |
|
|
"El Sazon de Cameron" - Delicious Fish Tacos!

Established: 1990 Hours: Daily 10am - 5pm Or Until Sold Out Phone: None Walk Up Only |
Cuisine: Roasted chicken from Wood Burning Brick Oven Location: Corner of Calle 4 Norte Avenida Pedro Joaquín Coldwell (formerly Avenida 30) |
An island tradition for that trip to the other side of the island. Just stop here before heading to the beach for a couple of chickens which come with tortillas, rice and other local 'taco making filler." Chickens start coming off the roaster more around 11am so plan accordingly! Nothing is better on a hot day at the beach than this fresh, warm chicken wrapped in tortillas. And what a money saver too with the restaurant prices these days on the other side of the island!
No need to go earlier than 10am as chickens must roast for several hours. |
|

Cuisine: Traditional Mexican foods. Until 11am Breakfast menu from $ 35 - 55 pesos Until 6pm Lunch menu $ 40 pesos (Includes punch to drink)
Until 11pm Dinner menu $40 - 250 pesos Location: Corner of Calle 2 Norte Avenida Pedro Joaquín Coldwell (formerly Avenida 30) Website: www.missioncoz.com |
Mission Parilla is hands down the best value and quality "local style" food in Cozumel. Located in the mid-town area, this is a popular restaurant for those island adventurers who tend to stay off the beaten path. Parilla has the most economical plate breakfasts and lunches on the island so the place is always filled with locals. Their dinner menu is economical but includes everything from chile relleno to shrimp shiskabobs and more!
Parilla earned even more respect here on the island in 2005 after hurricane Wilma as literally it was the only place open and serving food to the public for weeks. While stories of gouging and profit taking in other stores were all around, Mission Parilla prices and service remained the same. This restaurant also took on the responsibility of feeding the hundreds of electrical workers that were brought in from the mainland to restore power to the island. All the while, service never faltered for locals at Parilla.
This family also owns/operates Casa Mission on 55 Avenida and La Mission restaurant on AR Salas between Melgar & Avenida 5. |
|
|
"Las Palmas Loncheria" - Local style cooking doesn't get any better!
Cuisine: Breakfast & Lunch Food typical of this region Location: Calle 3 Sur & Avenida 25 |
Hours: Monday - Saturday 9:30am - 7pm Closed Sunday Food Service: Dine In Take Out No Delivery |
A locals favorite, this family operated establishment prepares a variety of lunch plates typical of this region. From seafood to breaded pork, this is Cozumel style home cooking at its best! Daily specials are offered on the chalkboard. All lunches include a bowl of soup and one of their "flavored water" drinks.
Instead of the pasta soup tell them you would prefer beans and rice [frijoles con arroz] and try the Jamaica [ha-may-ka] flavored water made from flower petals.
A great thing to order if you feel like splurging is the shrimp brochetta…they really know how to grill it!! Or the "Mero - al Mojo de Ajo" (Grouper grilled in garlic) is a superb choice as well! |
|
|
"Los Garanones" - Tacos and Cheeses!
Established: 2008 Hours: Daily 11am - 1:30am Food Service: Dine In Take Out No Delivery |
Cuisine: Mexican Location: Calle 11 Sur Between Avenidas 40 & 45 Across from Sports Fields Phone: 987-869-1646 |
Located in the heart of mid-town Cozumel with an excellent menu that includes not only tacos, fajitas and the like but also offers guacamole and melted cheese dishes which are perfect for group meal sharing. It's no wonder this place has become an instant favorite of locals and travelers! Excellent selection of table salsas here too including one very interesting garlic salsa not found in many other eateries here! |
|
|
"Los Seras" - Tacos and Pizza!
Established: 1990 Hours: Daily 7pm - 5:00am CLOSED MONDAY Food Service: Dine In Take Out No Delivery |
Cuisine: Mexican & Pizza Local Style Location: Avenida 30 Calle 7 Sur Phone: None Walk Up & Order to Take Out |
Los Seras is simply an island staple among locals for tacos, tortas and pizza! Tacos don't get much better than these! The take out business forms a line every night while the restaurant is always full as well. Seras is a big hit with the late night crowd since it's about the only place open with food after the bars close.
Seras offers a wide variety of pizza, too! The pizza area is a separate kitchen and service area which serves up "locals style" pizzas (this is NOT Domino's OK!) Excellent selection of table salsas here too including one incredible guacamole habanero mix not found anywhere else that is totally addictive!
The meat servings on each taco are large so order tacos with "double tortilla." It costs only a couple of pesos more but this way an order of 2 tacos really becomes 4 smaller ones with room to try the tasty salsas! |
|
|
"Pescaderia San Carlos" - Incredibly fresh seafood!
Established: 1999 Hours: Daily 7am - 5pm Food Service: Dine In Take Out No Delivery Credit Cards: None |
Cuisine: Seafood Location: Avenida 50 Bis Between Calle 3 Sur & ARosado Salas (Across from Mari Tere store & diagonal from DIF Park) Phone: 987-872-7440 |
Be brave and adventurous and give this spot a try. Rather than selling what he catches to local restaurants, this enterprising fisherman established his own eatery where customers can select from his catch of the day. The filetes empanizado (battered fried fish) is by far the best on the island. Try the seafood soup or the ceviche, which is mixed seafood in salsa. If you're really hungry, check out Carlos' whole fried fish.
Initially this was a "to go" or "take out" place only but now the restarurant area in back has been expanded to serve his growing base of loyal customers.
Expect to wait in line on Sundays for take out! |
|

My family and I have returned to Cozumel many times - it's a favorite destination and we have watched it change over the past 20 years. The Cozumel Insider is a great publication - it's a wonderful way to keep up with the news about one of our favorite islands. We are preparing to visit again this August and the Insider has shown us some different activities to try, as well as helped to bring us up to date with local political and ecological happenings. We're delighted to see the interest in wildlife conservation throughout the area. Keep up the good work on this terrific site. D. McClean ~ unknown

Dear Sherri, Our family met you just a week ago when we arrived in Cozumel, a little overwhelmed and in need of a hotel. You gave us great suggestions and we had a lovely week at Hotel Cozumel. I wanted to write and thank you for all your time and consideration. We also followed your beach suggestions and had wonderful snorkeling. Thank you, Sherri, for taking the time with us. And thank you for your wonderful website. We wish you the very best in the New Year and always. Foley Family ~ Minnesota

I want to take a moment to thank you at COZUMELINSIDER for all of your help. This is the first time I have ever booked activities such as these online and was very nervous about how it all worked. You took the time to answer all of my questions and even followed upwith a phone call to make sure you had all the information you needed to book the perfect vacation fun for my family. Thanks so much for making this a great experience! I can hardly wait to get there and enjoy all of these wonderful things! S. Daggett ~ Woodland Park, CO

Sherri and her staff did everything under the sun to help us get on one of their shore excursions. Phone calls and emails were promptly acknowledged and answered cheerfully and professionally. These are "home" folks; no need to worry about language or accents getting in the way of success. Book with confidence, and have fun! J Meyers ~ San Antonio, Texas
