Air Shuttle Schedules Cancun - Cozumel
Many major airlines fly direct to Cozumel daily Getting to Cozumel from Cancun via land involves
  • a 1 hour bus or taxi ride from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen
  • In Playa del Carmen travelers take a 40 minute ferry ride to the island of Cozumel.

To avoid this additional travel time, visitors often use the 15 minute air shuttle which departs from the same Cancun Airport.

Currently there are two shuttles operating.
Approximate cost is US$75 per person one way.
These schedules and prices may change at any time without prior notice.
Schedules posted as of August 2008.

    Cancun Airport Bus Schedule
Main shuttle bus terminal in Playa del Carman Upon exiting the Immigration, Customs and Baggage Claim area in the Cancun Airport there will be several service desks directly ahead with various transportation options. There are signs that indicate 'Airport Shuttle," "Taxi Service," as well as some car rental agencies. Keep asking and looking for the ADO bus service as it is located slightly out of direct sight.

This bus service makes regular trips between the Cancun Airport and Playa del Carmen. The stated schedule is one trip per hour but the truth is that the buses depart once they fill up with passengers. This means that most of the time, a bus is departing every 15 - 30 minutes. Allow about 1 hour travel time.

When combined with the ferry shuttle, this can be a very inexpensive alternative to the air shuttle between Cancun and Cozumel airports.

Due to the high volume of passengers, this schedule is usually very reliable.
The approximate cost (one way) is $80 pesos or US$8-10.

Ferry Service - Passengers - Between Cozumel & Mainland
Cozumel now enjoys the services of 2 competing passenger ferry companies which arrive and depart from the same location: the downtown San Miguel pier (Muelle Fiscal) and then arrive/depart from the same pier in Playa del Carmen as well.

The approximate cost (one way) is $110 Pesos or US$ 11 per person.
Schedules may change without notice but typically departures from either point are top of the hour.

There are over 630 taxis on the streets of Cozumel at any given time and they provide transportation to locals and tourists alike. The vehicles do not have meters, but rather there is an established fare that drivers are authorized to collect depending on distance and zone. Each driver must have this fare schedule in his possession and present it to the customer when requested to do so.

Always ask the driver how much the fare is from point A to point B before getting in the taxi. Be certain that you have close to the exact amount because drivers rarely carry a great deal of change and occasionally claim they have none in hopes of keeping it for themselves.

    Calling a Taxi: 872-0236
While you will almost always find taxis on the island's busier streets and waiting outside most hotels, you may have occasion to call a taxi to pick you up. You should be aware that if you need to catch an early plane or ferry, you would be better off calling one day prior to departure. Phones are generally not answered before 7:00 A.M., therefore, we suggest you call and schedule pick-up the night before your departure. Be aware that the individual answering the phone may speak little or no English, so if you are not a Spanish speaker, you may want to ask someone who is to do the calling for you. Again, be sure that you or the individual calling for you clarify what the rate will be from point A to point B.

It is customary to tip the gas station attendant and the kid who bags your groceries as well as taxi drivers in Mexico. If you feel that your driver has been especially friendly or helpful, you may wish to give him/her something extra!

    Taxi Fares
Since the exchange rate varies daily, all fares are listed in US dollars, are approximate and should be used as guidelines when checking fares with drivers.

Wheelchair access: At each pier there is person from the taxi syndicate that is in charge of assisting passengers. These people will have a radio. Simply let them know that you are in need of a taxi with wheelchair access and they will radio one of the vans with this capability.

These fares are based on a capacity of 1-4 pax.
For 5 pax add about US$ 4 and for 6-8 pax add about US$ 6.

    Moped Rentals
    Be Careful!!
The danger of using mopeds on Cozumel cannot be overstated.

The moped rental agencies are, for the most part, located in the downtown area or around the cruise ship piers so availability should not be an issue. However, with the increasing number of mopeds, pedestrians, bicycles and cars on Cozumel's narrow streets it is becoming very dangerous to ride mopeds around the island.

In fact, mopeds have become so dangerous that one of Cozumel's long time expats, Sally Hurwitch, regularly posts on the BB's her "Top Ten" List and INSIDER is pleased to present it here with Sally's permission ~

Sally's Top Ten Reasons to Pass on Renting a Moped in Cozumel

EVERY day people are "scraped up" off the roads of Cozumel as a result of a moped accident.
Some only suffer some road rash, which is bad enough to ruin a vacation. Others go home in a box.

    Always Wear a Helmet!
    10. Taxi drivers trying to get as many people to as many destinations per hour as possible.
    9. Mopeds do not have the power to accelerate out of a potentially dangerous situation.
    8. Roads have occasional patches of gravel for no reason.
    7. There are other tourists on scooters who don't know how to drive them.
    6. Scooters have a short wheel base which makes them difficult to maneuver.
    5. There are other tourists in rental cars who have just been to Carlos 'n' Charlie's.
    4. Beautiful vistas take your breath away, as well as your attention off the road.
    3. Most roads are one way, except when they're not.
    2. Moped brakes are not always reliable.
    1. Most north-south roads have the right-of-way.....with some exceptions.

    Get the picture?
So spend a little extra, surround yourself with metal and rent a car!

    Sally Hurwitch
    www.barefootincozumel.com

Be very careful of your surroundings if you choose to rent one, and by all means wear a helmet! IT'S THE LAW!

After an afternoon thunderstorm, the lack of drainage in the streets coupled with the oil on the streets creates a very slick road. It’s not advisable to ride a moped during these conditions.
    Gas Stations

There are now 3 PEMEX stations on the island.

Two are located on Ave Juarez ~

  • Corner of Avenida 30 with Juarez

  • Corner of Calle 75 with Juarez

The newest PEMEX station is south of the downtown area ~

  • Melgar / Beachfront Highway
Across the street from Puerta Maya and the International Pier.

    NOTE:
The new PEMEX near Puerta Maya seems to close early in the evenings on days when few/no ships are in port at the nearby piers.

Many times when filling up at a gas station, attendants will purposely not reset the gas pump if customers are not paying attention, causing folks to pay 2 to 3 times more than needed.  So please pay attention to make sure the attendant RESETS the pump to -0- before beginning the tank fill.

Self service is not a concept that has arrived to Mexico yet much less Cozumel. So sit back, relax, stay in the car and enjoy the full service gas stations of Cozumel. Just think of it as a "blast back to the past" good ole days! And please remember it IS customary to TIP the gas station attendant.
Horse Drawn Carriages - See the City!
Enjoy a Carriage Ride Tour Through the City! Another great way to tour the city area of Cozumel is by horse drawn carriage. Horse drawn carriages are an island tradition and have been operating in Cozumel for decades just as they do all across Mexico. These carriages typically take passengers back and forth between hotels or the ship piers and the downtown area but they are also available for a city highlights tour as well. Each carriage carries up to 4 passengers comfortably and sports a collapsing shade top for comfort.

The carriages can provide a complete highlights tour or they can take passengers to their destination via "a scenic route" if time allows. Simply discuss desired timeframe and highlights with the horseman and step up into the carriage to enjoy one of Mexico's time honored traditions of horse drawn carriages.

IMPORTANT NOTE: It goes without saying that Cozumel Insider is very well aware of the controversy surrounding the horsedrawn carriages and animal welfare concerns. Many would like to see the horse drawn carriages shut down completely because they feel the tropical heat is too much for the horses to bear but the likelihood of this happening is small since carriages are such a part of Mexican culture. As a result, perhaps it is more productive (for the horses' welfare) to try to work with, advise, support and encourage change with the operators rather than simply boycott their services. Because in the end, boycotting these services only ends up hurting the animals as there is no money at the end of the day to feed the herd.

Cozumel Insider continues to communicate with these operators pressing them to provide services during the evening hours when both the horses and passengers would enjoy the carriage ride even more. Perhaps this is the most viable short term solution for more humane treatment of the horses since the heat would be less of a factor.

So speak to the horseman as you depart and let him know that you enjoyed the carriage ride but would like to see the services offered at night instead! And if you run into any City officials along the way ~ tell them too! Perhaps a concerted effort on everyone's part can lead to a viable solution for improved conditions for the horses while maintaining a long time Cozumel tradition of horse drawn carriage transporation.

Hello Cozumel Insider - Just wanted to thank you very much for organizing the tour to Coba and Tulum and the snorkel at Akumel for our family on December 27th. We had a wonderful day and would like our appreciation for our driver and guide to be noted. We understood our tour was for 8 hours and after spending too much time at the sites of the ruins (they are amazing and, with our daughter who is in her 3rd year of archaeology, spent longer than most visiting Coba) our day was running a bit short of time. We thought we would have to forgo our planned snorkel at Akumel, but both our driver and tour guide agreed to put in an hour and a half extra to allow us to swim.

We truly appreciated this - Mexico is a beautiful country with many diverse treasures and to have people so eager for us to see and enjoy them made them all that more special!!

Thank you!! Julie Bose Family ~ Salmon Arm, BC Canada

We searched for rental agencies before we got there on a cruise Thanksgiving last year and decided to use Less Pay. They delivered as advertised. Other rental agencies were much higher for the same type of vehicle, a Jeep Wrangler.

We're spending a week in Cozumel in August of and are making arrangements for 3-4 jeeps. Look forward to the same service again. Ron B ~ Opelousas, Louisiana

Just want you to know that everything worked out great with LessPay! They honored their web price, let us pick up a day early, and when the car had problems (bad brakes & clutch), they happily swapped it out for another car the next day, no questions asked. We were very impressed with how efficient they were with paperwork, and they even offered to drive us to the ferry when we turned the car back in! We will definitely use them again and will recommend them to others. Their prices were reasonable and they were very friendly (and spoke English, too). R. Wolf ~ Mimon, MA

Everything worked out great. Dolphins were wonderful. Less Pay vehicle was drivable, didn't use as much as I thought I would so glad I saved $100 or so instead of using Avis. We loved Cozumel, saw your office, and visited your neighbors at the real estate office downstairs. Thanks for all your help and great web site! S. Dooley ~ not given
